RENZI SEEKING THE RECKONING INSIDE PD AND CALL FOR IMMEDIATELY NEW ELECTIONS

by Massimo Colaiacomo

President Mattarella is in a quandary after PM Matteo Renzi resigned. The thrashing of Renzi and his majority at constitutional referendum have created a serious political context. Bigger party call for immediately new elections, despite the lack of a electoral law for Senate's election. Several month ago, Italian parliament approved new electoral law, so-called Italicum, but didn't approve a law for the Senate because the constitutional overhaul provide for direct election just for the Congress.
So, what does it urge PM Renzi to call for immediately elections? It matter of the firm belief the result of referendum would be a strong basis whom built a new electoral success. Italy'people knows  very well the sinuous road of politic crisis and is accustomed to his liturgy. News analyst are divided around the causes of Renzi's defeat. Several their point to the haughtiness of premier as the main cause and as a consequence the decision of voters to turn away him. For whatever reason, PM lost his tremendous appeal on the public opinion and inside his party.
Renzi aims the election for a day of reckoning with internal minority. Whether he will be able to obtain  early election, he will keep the power building the list. In this case Renzi will able to free himself from his own opponent. It is an optimistic assessment in this big picture. President Mattarella asks for PM to pospone resignation almost as long as Parliament will approve the budget. But, even after, President Mattarella believes they are other problems who wait for an answer, starting of the situation of financial institution.
It's not totally correct, like this morning wrote Jason Horowitz on The New York Times, that "for once, Prime minister Matteo Renzi doesn't seem to be in a hurry". To the contrary, Mr. Renzi is in a hurry because the time that spent bolsters his internal opposing. Almost alike is the situation in the centre-right with former Prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, will be at loggerheads with allied Salvini and Meloni. Berlusconi would postpones new elections at better time or at least when it will be possibile to have a new electoral law maybe proportional. Salvini, Lega's leader, is absolutely unfavorable because an proportional representative could reduce his weight in the centre-right, inasmuch Forza Italia could show without his allied to judgment of the voters.
President Sergio Mattarella is known for his institutional carefulness. He won't be rude to Renzi as the other political scene's protagonist. He will take for all time necessary to set relevant question, at beginning from financial institution. After, it need wait for Supreme Court's sentence on the present electoral law, expected for January. They are many probability that new elections will be possibile not before fall 2017.
